Abstract

PCB is the heart of any electronic device as it acts as the physical medium that is insulator in nature and hosts the components and their respective interconnections. On the early days of the electronics circuits there were only a few components involved in developing a system.

So a simple point to point wiring was enough to make the necessary connections. As the system became complex and the components start shrinking direct wiring was not possible. To overcome the complex connection issues.

Then reduce the overall size an early form of PCB history developed during the early 1900’s. Which was then called as Printed Wiring Board or PWB.

1.Printed Circuit Assembly 

The term PWB quickly replace by printed circuit assembly or PCA. Which represented the fully populated wiring board. Or in other worlds an early form printed circuit board. Early circuit boards had copper or brass strips. And which is either glue or rivette to the drilled board.

 

After few improvements the modern PCA’s  etching copper trace on a fiber glass.  Or Bakelite base which connecting the relatively massive electronic components that been use during the early 1920’s. PCA were made either by etching the copper or by spraying metal on the Bakelite board.

2.Single layer PCB  History

During the radio era manufacturers shifted from Bakelite and Masonite. To resin basic boards due to the flexibility and cheap price. Early 1930’s saw the much familiar epoxy resin board with components on one side. And copper traces on the other side. These early board were hand drawn and manually etched. For mass production hand drawn templates were used to mark the traces with industrial dies.  While most of the early PCB were hand soldered. Due to the lack of accuracy in machine soldering.

 

3.Modern PCB

Double-sided plate PCB’s through holes were developed in the late 1940’s. During the same time where manufacturing was regulated and standardized by global authorities like IPC.  Later there were major changes in material selection and manufacturing technology. It thanks to the huge boom in the electronics market.

 

While people created multilayer layer boards to satisfy the immense need for the complex wiring in the digital era. Lack of computers and CAD designs made designing more complex and time consuming.

So designs must be hand drawn or mask using tapes which were cut individually during the design stage. After the design stage cameras were use for creating a negative copy of the designs. Which will be used in the production line for masking the copper traces. Then same technique is used for the solder mask and silkscreen layers.
